Dexter Faces Himself

In Jeremy Downs, Dexter sees himself as he was in the past. Jeremy Downs was a potential victim that Dexter began to investigate. Dexter knew that tens of thousands of prisoners were released each year. He was looking for one specific type of parole. There were the ones who would change their ways and go on to live a good life.

Others would revert back to their life of crime, and then there were the dangerous ones. He would go after the prisoners who thought that they had tricked everyone into believing that they were good individuals who deserved to be released from prison. However, Dexter knew that they would go on to take innocent lives and he aimed to stop them before they could.

Checking into the past of Jeremy Downs, Dexter discovered that he had killed a teenager when he was just 15 years old himself. Jeremy stabbed to death a teen and was given a light sentence. He was sent to juvenile detention and released when he became of age. Jeremy had managed to convince the justice system that it was a one time event.

However, Dexter knew the truth. While law enforcement thought that it was a spur of the moment crime, Dexter knew that Jeremy Downs had meant to kill the teen. All the knife strokes appeared innocent, but Dexter saw that Jeremy had purposely hit every major artery in his victim. The death was a murder plain and simple. The young Jeremy had all the makings of a future serial killer and Dexter had to stop him from killing any more innocent people.

After their confrontation, Jeremy Downs admitted his crime but refused to show remorse. Dexter learned that the teen was murdered because he abused children. He had abused Jeremy. Dexter could not take his life because it would go against the code of Harry. Jeremy was a murderer, but he killed someone who deserved to die.

Dexter let him go with the advice that only those who deserved to die should be killed. He hoped that Jeremy would take the advice to heart. He knew that Jeremy was a potential serial killer, but he knew that Jeremy could make the right decision when he chose his next victim.

After being called to a new crime scene, Dexter appeared mesmerized as he looked at the body of a teenage boy. He knew the knife wounds, he had seen them before. It did not take him long to realize that Jeremy was the culprit. He once again hunted Jeremy and tried to talk some sense into him. Only kill the bad people. Leave the innocents alone. Instead Jeremy had killed a young teen that had a great future planned.

We will never know what Dexter had planned for Jeremy Downs as Sgt. Doakes found and arrested him quickly. Sneaking into his interrogation room, Dexter once again reaffirmed his code. Jeremy needed to understand that taking innocent lives were wrong. He left Jeremy but came back to him. Dexter felt that he was unfair to the teen. Dexter had Harry to explain everything to him, but Jeremy had no one.

Dexter once again attempted to visit Jeremy. He would be there for him and teach him everything that Harry had taken the time to show him. Jeremy had obviously not listened when he told him to kill those who deserved to die but Dexter would work hard to see that he heard now. Upon his final visit to Jeremy, Dexter realized that he had heard the message. With his final victim, Jeremy had killed someone who deserved to die. Jeremy killed himself.
