Dexter Season Two Recap

LaGuerta is a demoted detective and she appears to be holding up surprisingly well. As her newly appointed boss appears to be falling apart, LaGuerta is shown as a caring individual and viewers are unsure if she is helping the woman to get her job back or because she understands the pressure of such a high position, having held it in the past.

Eventually the Lieutenant is removed because she could not keep her personal and professional life separate. She believed that her fiancée was cheating and she brought her problems to work with her. After LaGuerta is reinstated, we learn that she was the woman the fiancée was cheating with. LaGuerta used her boss’s fragile mental state against her to get her job back, even though it meant ruining the career of someone else.

Sgt. Doakes is still on Dexter’s trail and he’s harder to shake than ever. They work together during the day and Doakes stalks him all night for months on end. He has no proof but Doakes knows he’s guilty of something and aims to prove it. Doakes stalks, targets and eventually begins to delve into Dexter’s past to find out what makes him so suspicious.

When he gets to close to the truth, Doakes brings forth his own downfall as law enforcement finds the Bay Harbor Butcher evidence and believes that it points to Doakes as the serial killer. Doakes leaves his job and what little friends and family he has left all in his obsession to find Dexter’s secret. The obsession eventually causes him to lose his life.

Dexter’s lies begin to reach the surface as his victims bodies are found buried in a Mariner where he often boats. He has to stay ahead and on focus to prevent the police from finding out that he is the newly titled Bay Harbor Butcher. After the problems in the past with his brother, Dexter begins to lose his edge a bit and he messes up at crimes scenes, and he also makes mistakes as tries to kill another guilty victim.

In his home life, his problems continue. Rita finds out that he lied about her husband Paul. Dexter did attack him and frame him with drugs. After his death Rita figures that Dexter must be an addict and he confesses that he is but withholds the fact that his addiction is murder and not alcohol or drugs. After she forces him to visit AA meetings their troubles double and triple with the presence of Lila.

Lila Tournay is not what she seems and a pretty face hides her dark soul. She is as empty as Dexter and quickly establishes herself as a thief and pyromaniac. As Dexter learns of her dark ways, he attempts to remove Lila from his life but she refuses to leave him. She tries one trick after another to get him to stay. Lila burns down her own home and artist studio, uses Dexter’s friend Angel, frames Angel for rape and eventually kills Doakes and attempts to kill Dexter and Rita’s children. He removes her from his life permanently at the end of season two.
