Dexter Feelings and Emotions
As Sgt. James Doakes discovered, Dexter does not seem to have emotions. Dexter has called himself a “neat monster” and a person who feels nothing and cares for no one. He so believes this fact that he says if he could care for just one person it would be his adopted sister Debra “Deb” Morgan. As the show progresses we can see that Dexter is lying to himself or he is just so used to feeling nothing that he doesn’t recognize an emotion when it hits him. At times Dexter can seem like the cold monster he professes to be. Doakes has been critical and suspicious of Dexter because he notices what others do not. He sees that Dexter is a little too mesmerized by blood and bodies at each crime scene. Like his need to kill, it also seems as though Harry taught Dexter that he has no feelings. He spent large amounts of time during Dexter’s childhood telling and teaching that he had to pretend. If he wanted to blend into a crowd and fool people into thinking that he was “normal” and not a monster, Dexter would need to be an expert at lying, about his emotions and everything else. As Dexter explained, once his romantic relationships began to move forward and the women began to expect more from him, it was time to move on. While dating Rita, he tried but could not make himself leave this relationship. He says he has no emotions and he feels nothing. Along with everything else in his life, one has to wonder if he stays with Rita because he cares for her or because she is the woman his father and sister would like him to settle down with. With his emotions under tight control, it is hard to shake Dexter’s composure. However, once Rita life is threatened by her husband Paul, Dexter snaps and sets off on a rocky road that could spell the end of his life with Rita. He plans his every move carefully, but he strays from his code and planning during one hot burst of anger. When Rita is insulted by one of his victims, Dexter once again snaps and ends the interrogation of a murderous car salesman, much sooner than he normally would. Season two of Dexter saw the emergence of a new character Lila. This British bombshell was shown to be unstable and suspicious from the very beginning but she understood Dexter and with his penchant for committing murder every now and then, Lila would have been a better soul mater. Instead, Dexter chose to protect Rita from Lila and anyone else who would threaten her life. Dexter Morgan says that he feels nothing. This means that he has no love even for the adopted sister he cares about. Dexter proved that once again he was either lying or did not recognize the love he felt for Deborah.
In the finale of season one, we learn that Debra’s boyfriend was actually the serial murderer known as the Ice Truck Killer. He was also exposed as Dexter’s older brother from his dark past. No one knew Dexter’s secret except for an adopted father who has been long deceased. Rudy can share and understood what Dexter is going through, as he has the same dark desires of a psychopath. Dexter may have been able to have a relationship with Rudy even though he killed innocents. The moment the Ice Truck Killer decided that his sister Deb Morgan had to die; Dexter decided that he had to kill his blood brother he barely knew to save the adopted sister he was raised with. After taking his brother’s life, Dexter fell apart and so did everything around him. It seems that he made the right decision when he chose to protect his sister, but it is a decision that haunts him with “what ifs”. Dexter has a hard time showing emotions because he can’t understand them. The most difficult emotion for him to show is grief and sorrow when someone close to him dies. Dexter often wears a creepy smile and offbeat humor that only Doakes seems to notice. As Sgt. Doakes and Dexter’s conflict come to a head, Doakes was often able to push his buttons with less effort than it took in the past. Dexter claims to have no emotions, but is he lying to himself or to the world around him? PPPPP Word Count 738
