Irish Jewelry
St. Patrick's Day is the day when Irish traditions and symbols are used to show support for the Irish heritage. There are some famous rings and other jewelry that are part of the Irish culture and are now known throughout the world. Considered good luck by many Irish people, these rings are as popular now as they have been throughout the past centuries in Ireland. They show the rich tradition that makes Ireland famous. * Claddagh Ring - This ring originated as a faith ring in the middle ages. It became popular in Ireland and was named for a small fishing village near Galway. The ring has two hands holding a heart that is wearing a crown. The ring symbolizes love, friendship and loyalty. The hands represent the friendship, the heart represents love and the crown represents loyalty. Often used as a wedding ring, the heart should be worn with the point inward. The ring is also popularly used as a friendship ring and is worn by those who are proud of their Irish heritage.
* Gimmal Ring - Similar in design to the Claddagh ring, the Gimmal ring is a traditional Irish wedding ring. There are two hands that surround and cover the heart. There are actually three separate rings that together make up the complete image. Each of the three parts has a special meaning in the promise of betrothal. Before the wedding one part is kept by the girl, one part by the suitor and the third part by the priest. Each part is kept separate until the wedding ceremony, when all three parts are joined together to form the wedding ring.
* Celtic Love Knot -This popular traditional Irish wedding ring uses Celtic art to form the ring design. The ring uses three intertwined ropes to symbolize eternity, unity and fidelity. The lines of the Celtic love knot are forever intertwined to symbolize two lives joined together as one. Wearing the ring signifies that a bond has been formed, telling the world that you are no longer single.
* Emerald Ring - The Emerald ring signifies the "wearin' of the green", a lucky symbol to those of Irish heritage. Green is the color most often associated with Ireland and is also closely linked to spring. Therefore, the ring signifies love and rebirth. Wearing the emerald ring acknowledges one as a descendent from the Emerald Isle. Throughout Irish history the emerald was considered a magical stone by forest sprites and Irish fairies.
* Tara Brooch - Irish people are known for their love of ornamentation. The Tara Brooch is a famous ornamental piece of jewelry that was thought to have been made for royalty. Both men and women would have worn such a piece. Its likeness has been handed down through many reproductions throughout the years. The original brooch is set with diamonds and other precious stones while reproductions often use crystals. This famous piece of jewelry is also a popular Irish wedding symbol, used in decorations and as a stationary motif.
