St. Patrick's Day Celebrations Around The World
St. Patrick's Day, March 17, is celebrated around the world by people of Irish heritage as well as many of non-Irish descent. Celebrations are themed around all things Irish and around the color green. The color green has long been associated with Ireland. Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle because of its lush green countryside. The color green has come to be used as a symbol of Irish heritage, especially when worn on St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Patrick was a bishop who traveled through Ireland teaching the Irish about Christianity. After his death in 461AD, he was made a Saint. The Irish celebrated every year with a feast to commemorate St. Patrick's death. Originally, this day was Catholic feast day in Ireland. Throughout the years it has become a non-secular day of celebration now called St. Patrick's Day. Through Irish immigration, the Irish traditions and folklore have been spread all over the world. There are now St. Patrick's Day celebrations in many countries. People of Irish heritage show their support to their country of origin by wearing green and celebrating the day. Even those who aren't Irish love to celebrate along with the Irish. Parades are held all around the world in honor of St. Patrick's Day. The first parade surprisingly wasn't in Ireland. It was in New York City on March 17, 1762 and was organized by Irish soldiers. That was the start to a new tradition. Today, St. Patrick's Day parades are held in many countries and cities in the world. The largest parade in Ireland is held in the capital city of Dublin. Celebrations are the largest where there is a large population of Irish immigrants. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, many Irish people immigrated to many various countries. As a result, many cities in the world now have a large population of people with Irish heritage. Celebrations around the world include parades, fireworks and dances. Irish dancing is still a very strong tradition. Most cities and countries have Irish dance troupes who learn and perform traditional Irish step dances. They wear beautiful costumes with Celtic embroidered designs. Irish folk music is commonly played at local Irish pubs around the globe. Stepping into an Irish pub anywhere feels as though you are taking a walk back in time to Ireland. Guinness beer is the oldest operating beer company in Ireland and exports beer to just about every country. Irish people all over the world make sure they wear green on St. Patrick's Day. This age old tradition signifies good luck and represents an allegiance with Ireland. The Shamrock is often used to decorate with and can be seen on everything from t-shirts to socks and mugs. You'll even see some children with the Shamrock painted on their face for this happy celebration. Parents dress even their youngest babies in green. You'll find a sea of green when you attend a parade or go to an Irish style pub on St. Patrick's Day. Be prepared for a good time because that is part of what this celebrated day is all about.
